As the weather cools and the holidays draw near, let’s not even talk about the state of the world many of us, myself included, start to feel the weight of seasonal depression. This time of year can be especially tough when everything around us seems joyful and bright. If you’re feeling a little down, I hope these eight tips help you move through the season with more ease and peace.

1. Create Your Own Tradition

Start a special tradition that brings you joy and gives you something to look forward to each year. Host a cozy dinner party for friends and family, or plan a festive slumber party for your kids, nieces, or nephews. Having something that’s yours to celebrate can make the holidays feel more meaningful.

2. Journal Your Feelings

Instead of bottling everything up, try writing down how you feel. Journaling can be incredibly therapeutic, it’s like lifting a weight off your shoulders. Don’t just focus on what’s bothering you; make space for gratitude too. Writing down what you’re thankful for can help shift your perspective.

3. Spend Time with Loved Ones

Connection is one of the best remedies for depression. Go out to dinner, catch a game, meet for happy hour, plan a weekend trip, or host a cozy movie night. You could even try something new together, like a candle-making class or a perfume making class. Surround yourself with people who make you feel good.

4. Give Back

Helping others is one of the most fulfilling ways to lift your own spirit. Volunteer at a local shelter, join a Big Brothers Big Sisters program, or create an Amazon wish list to brighten a family’s Christmas morning. Acts of kindness have a beautiful way of filling your heart.

5. Escape Into a Good Book

There’s nothing like getting lost in a good story. Reading can transport you to another world and give your mind a much-needed break.

6. Move Your Body

Exercise is one of the most effective mood boosters. Whether it’s yoga, Pilates, walking, or lifting weights, find something you enjoy and move for at least an hour a day. Your body and mind will thank you.

7. Start a New Hobby

Try something you’ve always wanted to do, start sewing, launch a blog, or finally dive into that passion project you’ve been putting off. New hobbies spark creativity and give you something positive to focus on.

8. Prioritize Self-Care

Take time for yourself. Book a spa day, meditate, or create a relaxing self-care ritual at home. Speak affirmations to yourself each morning and remind yourself that happiness begins with you. You deserve to feel good, inside and out.

Remember, seasonal depression is something many of us experience, and it doesn’t define you. Be gentle with yourself, take things one day at a time, and focus on the little moments that bring you peace. Whether it’s a cozy cup of tea, a walk in fresh air, or laughter with friends, those small joys matter more than you think. You’re doing your best, and that’s enough.
